Honour Your Grandparents! Now and Always.

By Mabi Azefor Fominyen,

Grandparents' Day 2009 will be celebrated on September 13.

Our Grandparents are our pride, our heritage and key members of our families and communities. Little wonder therefore that a special day is set aside to honour and celebrate their lives. Their love and dedication to their grandchildren is beyond measure even though this is sometimes taken for granted.

In September last year(2008) I wrote an article on my blog on the role our Grandparents play in our homes/communities. On the occasion, I had one thing at the back of my mind -hence the title of the post "Don't You Think Grandma and Grandpa need a Break?"(Click here for the piece).

We may never be able to pay back Grandma or Grandpa for all she/he has done and has been to us, but we can make her/him know how much she/he is loved and thought of at all times and especially on GRANDPARENTS' DAY.

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate with long-distance Grandparents.

What's your idea?

Hi Mabi! Indeed our grandparents deserve our love, but this could be a little misleading for as the Bible says:
10:37 He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ...
I think the controversy between Christian Feast Days and too many Pagan Holidays in our world should be carefully considered.

Hi Mabi! - 'Lady of Pride'
Indeed, we should honor our grandparents who deserve our love unconditionally, but as the Bible says...Quote-Matt. 10:37. He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.
10:38. And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.
True indeed, I think this privilege is being abused by some grandparents and parents on their children, who I dare say expect difficult sacrifices from their children.
Besides, I think this controversy over Christian Feast Days to Pagan Holidays should be carefully considered with a cautious mind!
Soon we will start having world tomatoes day and world onions day!
How many children know 14th Sept was the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross and 15th Sept. Feast of the Seven Dolors of Our Lady!
N.B. And I don't like or advise people to be horoscope minded; even a little bit!

Dear Bro Paul,
Thanks for sharing your opinion on this post."Honour Your Grandparents Now and Always"
Thank you for the biblical quotes.
From your comments, I am happy we both agree that we need to show love to our grandparents. Afterall the bible also teaches us to love one another as God loves us.
No where in this post did I state that we should honour our grandparents more than....

Many international days do exist, just like Christian feast days, whether such days are important or not and just how such days are celebrated might equally depend on where the individual stands. I remember being assigned to cover events marking such days and writing newstories intended to raise public awareness on this or that International day. Then, I simply did my job.

You say you won't "advice people to be horoscope minded", I wonder what you will say if I told you I had presented the horoscope news back in 2001 while working on the radio!I remained 'me' even after that. Besides, there are many people who follow & rely on the horoscope each day!

Appreciating difference could sometimes do the trick! That too is also another leadership quality I learnt over the years.
